Attorney General: Roadway Solicitations Not Legal
Posted: Monday, September 26, 2016
Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette recently authored a formal opinion to lawmakers that Michigan’s traffic code does not allow for roadway solicitation by charities (Opinion 7291 MiLW No. 11-92432).
Readers may recall that last year in Lansing, firefighter Dennis Rodeman was struck and killed by a driver while he was in the road collecting money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
Schuette's opinion has caused some fire departments to cancel their efforts to collect for charities. According to Monty Nye of the Michigan Professional Firefighters Union, the union has collected for charities in the roadway for 63 years. Nye hopes that the attorney general will further review this matter and find a way to allow for their collection efforts.
