Risk Control Advisory Committees: A Great Way to Get Involved

Posted: Wednesday, January 16, 2013

by Allen Smolen and Terry Van Doren, Risk Control Consultants

One of the major benefits of MMRMA membership is the opportunity to serve on one of its many committees.

Unlike commercial insurance companies, MMRMA is owned and governed by its members. The Board of Directors developed and adopted a committee policy that provides for the creation of seven Risk Control Advisory Committees to assist management and members in the identification of new and emerging loss exposures and to develop practical risk control resources that members can use to reduce the frequency and severity of loss. The resources can take the form of model policies and procedures, bulletins, videos, and other media. The advisory committees also identify projects and programs for potential grant funding through the Risk Avoidance Program (RAP), such as campsite fire rings and police bumper guards.

Committee members are appointed by the Board Chair to three-year terms and are eligible to serve for additional terms, with no term limits. To be eligible to participate on a committee you must be an employee or official of an MMRMA member entity.

The committees meet regularly at various locations around the state. An MMRMA Risk Control Consultant is assigned to serve as a liaison to each risk control advisory committee, which are organized according to the following functional areas:

  • Administrative (Liaison Jack Barron,
  • Fire/EMS (Liaison Al Smolen,
  • Law Enforcement – Lower Peninsula (Liaison Bill Page,
  • Law Enforcement – Upper Peninsula (Liaison Kevin Denecke,
  • Parks & Recreation (Liaison Terry VanDoren,
  • Public Services (Liaison Terry VanDoren,
  • 911/Telecommunications (Liaison Mike Berthā,

Committee membership provides an excellent opportunity to meet with a network of peers while furthering one’s professional development. Committee vacancies are posted on MMRMA’s website when they arise.
