MMRMA Publishes Additional Cyber Security Resources for Members

Posted: Tuesday, January 19, 2021

The Technology and Cyber Security Risk Control Advisory Committee prepared several resources to help members mitigate and respond to cyber threats.

Latest Resources Now Available on the Pros and Cons of Cloud Apps, Protecting Against Identity Theft, and Developing Cyber Security Vendor Protocols

Cloud Applications

This bulletin outlines some of the advantages and disadvantages of using Cloud services.

Preventing Identity Theft

Cyber criminals are hard at work, seeking any information that could enable them to steal identities.  Unfortunately, many victims are helping the cybercriminals accomplish their mission. This bulletin is intended to help understand and avoid falling victim to identity theft.

Cyber Security Vendor Protocols

When it comes to cyber security MMRMA members may wonder how they can be sure they are hiring the correct vendor(s). It is recommended that members establish and follow protocols for selecting vendors to manage the security of their data and networks and for regularly monitoring and evaluating such vendors on an ongoing basis.

More Bulletins Coming Soon

The committee is finalizing additional resources on virtual private networks (VPNs) and more. Watch for more upcoming announcements.

Meanwhile, please access and share these resources with your information technology personnel to assist them in their efforts to protect your entities.

How Members Can Access These Resources

Member employees with an MMRMA.org user account can log in and retrieve these documents on the Members Only page under Risk Management Tools in the Risk Control Bulletins subfolder. If members need assistance finding this folder, or would like to request a login, please contact Tamara Christie, Communications Manager, at tchristie@mmrma.org.

If you have questions about these documents or need further risk control assistance, please contact MMRMA's Membership Services department.

Previously Published Technology/Cyber Security Bulletins

These related resources were previously published and are also available on our site in the aforementioned section:

Password Security Management and Authentication

Passwords are an important and a necessary aspect of computer and network security. Passwords are the frontline of protection for user accounts and electronic security. This resource provides guidance and information on how to select, secure, and manage passwords.

Criminal Justice Information (CJI) Systems Audits

This bulletin is designed to serve the needs of criminal justice government agencies in the State of Michigan regarding technology security audits on criminal justice information (CJI) systems. These audits are conducted by the Michigan State Police every two to three years on every agency in the state. This resource is presented to MMRMA members as an overview and suggested best practices relating to CJIS audits.

Cyber Incident Response Plan

Local governments in the United States have experienced an increase in cyber attacks over the years. Not only have security-related threats increased in frequency and diversity, the resulting impact of each successful attack has been amplified to unprecedented levels.

Every organization needs to have a codified prevention and response plan.  Without a plan an incident is more likely to occur, less likely to be discovered in a timely fashion and, without formal, planned mitigation efforts, the severity (both the impact to service ability and cost) of the plan is likely to increase substantially.

Integrating Physical and Cyber Security

The purpose of this resource is to help member public entities conduct pre-assessments of facilities and operations to reduce the likelihood, and potential severity, of a security incident. Said incident(s) could be either physical, virtual, or a combination of both in nature. Consider the integration of physical security with technological/cyber security manifestations as a larger strategy.

Proactive Email Monitoring

Email is a critical component of most entities’ business operations and is arguably the most-used application on computing devices. It is also a potentially vulnerable exposure for cyber incidents. Fortunately, there are steps organizations can take to address these risks, and this resource will help members in conducting this process.

Cybersecurity Framework Checklist

The committee developed a cybersecurity framework checklist to assist members in managing risks with regard to cyber security. This framework is intended to outline best practices, and it is as current as possible at the time of publication. Please note that cyber risk is an ever-changing area of exposure that requires real-time monitoring and frequent updating.
