Michigan Abolishes Helmet Requirement Under Certain Circumstances

Posted: Wednesday, May 2, 2012

After several unsuccessful tries with several different governors, the motorcycle lobby has finally gotten its bill passed. As of April 13, 2012, motorcycle riders in Michigan now have the right to choose whether they wear a helmet or not.

This right requires certain effort. The rider must meet a training and experience requirement. Further, the rider must carry at least $20,000 of medical coverage. The law enforcement community had previously explained the problems with enforcing these requirements, but these issues seemed unpersuasive to the Legislature.

The bill’s supporters anticipate an influx of tourism business from out of state motorcycle clubs, which previously avoided Michigan because of the state’s helmet law.
