In Memoriam: Risk Control Consultant Al Smolen

Posted: Thursday, December 20, 2018

It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the loss of a dear colleague, Al Smolen. Al passed away peacefully at the home of his son on Tuesday, December 18, following an illness.

Formerly a long-time firefighter with Van Buren Township, Al retired from that role in 2006. He also served as interim public safety director for the township prior to his retirement. He joined MMRMA as a part-time Risk Control Consultant in May 2006 and was made full-time in March 2015.

During his tenure at MMRMA, Al worked closely with members, staff, and state officials to help prevent the loss of life and property, which served to enhance the quality of life for the citizens of Michigan. He served as the staff liaison to MMRMA’s Fire and EMS Risk Control Advisory Committee, helping produce resources and develop training initiatives for MMRMA members. He also visited members regularly to provide guidance and offer his skills in this important area of public entity operations.

Al was extraordinarily generous with his knowledge and expertise, often offering to write valuable content for MMRMA’s Risk Journal and risk control bulletins. He was also a warm and caring colleague who frequently inquired about his coworkers’ families. His laughter and kind words were sources of joy for all who knew him.

Our hearts go out to everyone who knew and loved Al, especially his family. We know the membership and the entire MMRMA community will be affected by this sad loss.
