Member Recognition Award

Posted: Thursday, February 9, 2012

MMRMA is proud to announce the launch of its member recognition award. The idea materialized from discussions at the Board of Directors’ strategic planning meetings. The Board established the program and outlined several key benefits and components of the award program:

A.      Member recognition reinforces the importance of the development and implementation of innovative safety and loss control programs. Such programs can result in the reduction of the frequency and severity of member losses. Loss prevention and loss reduction improve the bottom line for both the member and MMRMA.
B.      MMRMA is afforded the opportunity to formally recognize a member for excellence. This creates positive public relations as well as overall good for the organization.
C.      MMRMA will reward a member for their risk management work and provide a tangible and a monetary award.
D.     MMRMA’s acknowledgement will reinforce and supplement the recognition earned by the municipality and the citizens they serve.
Upon receiving authorization by the Board of Directors, the Membership Committee was asked to work on development of the program. The Board also established the Membership Committee as the decision makers in the selection of the annual award winner.
Discussions with the Membership Committee established the application format and qualifying information. Application criteria and questions include:
  • General description of the program/project
  • Innovation
  • Problem(s) being addressed
  • Participants
  • Expected cost or loss reduction
  • Expense incurred in implementation
  • Results and/or improvement realized
  • Transferability (use by other members)
  • Management support and Member Representative authorization

The application criteria include both risk management and departmental operation projects. Weight will be given to risk management, but the Membership Committee wanted to include operations improvements, if the program’s criteria are met.

A first place and an honorable mention award will be issued each year. To assist in the selection process, the State Pool Committee has been asked to serve as the judging body for the applications received from State Pool members. From the State Pool entries submitted, the State Pool Committee will nominate their choice of a single applicant. That entry will be sent to the Membership Committee to compete against the entries from Individual Members.

The application submission deadline will be April 15th of each year. This will allow time for each of the committees to fully review submissions and make their decisions. The winner will be selected by June 1st. Formal membership recognition will be bestowed at the Board of Directors meeting at each annual MMRMA membership meeting in August. The first award will be presented in 2012, and the presentation will become an annual event thereafter.

Included in the program award will be travel expenses and hotel accommodations at the Grand Traverse resort for up to three representatives of the award-winning member. The member and its winning project will also be featured in MMRMA’s Annual Report, Risk Journal, and on its website.

Monetary recognition will include a cash award equal to 5% of the member’s general fund contribution up to a maximum of $5,000. To benefit the employees/department involved in the successful program, a secondary monetary award will include up to $500 to be spent on an award luncheon or award recognition apparel. In order to provide something tangible to take back to the community, an award plaque will be provided to the member to display within its municipality.

Applications are available from the Risk Control department and can also be downloaded by clicking here.
